The proportion of young people who neither study nor work is higher in these regions due to the fragility of the economic fabric and phenomena such as dropping out of school. Trend has grown in the last five years, points out a European study coordinated by Iscte.
The proportion of young people who neither study nor work (known as “nem-nor”) is higher in rural areas than in cities or moderately urbanized areas. This population is more exposed to the fragility of the economy of these territories and to phenomena such as school dropout or mobility, which accentuates the problems of desertification, concludes a report coordinated by Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, within the scope of a European research project.
