More marriages don’t rhyme with more births
The increase in marriages, having implications for birth rates, will essentially be in the birth of second children. And, in Portugal, the ‘first birth’ is clearly dominant.
On July 16, 2021, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported, in its highlight, of a significant increase in marriages in the month of May. 2602 marriages were celebrated, a value that is equivalent to more than triple that observed in the same month of the previous year.
