Professor Luís Ferreira, Rector of the University of Lisbon, was today elected President of the Portuguese Council of University Rectors (CRUP) for a three-year term, at the plenary meeting held this afternoon at the University of Beira Interior, in Covilhã.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for the next CRUP plenary meeting, to be held on 11 May at the University of Évora.

Luís Ferreira succeeds Paulo Ferreira, Rector of the University of Aveiro, who has served as President of CRUP since 2023.

The election of the new President takes place at a time of significant challenges for higher education and for the national scientific system, with CRUP being called upon to strengthen the role of Portuguese universities in the country’s development, in the advancement of society’s qualifications, and in Portugal’s international standing.

CRUP welcomes the election of Luís Ferreira and expresses its confidence in his mandate and in the continuation of the work of institutional representation, cooperation among universities, and the enhancement of Portuguese university higher education.
