height=&#8221;40px&#8221;][vc_column_text]Iscte was created in 1972, under the acronym ISCTE &#8211; Instituto Superior de Ci\u00eancias do Trabalho e da Empresa, to teach undergraduate courses in the fields of sociology and management and aimed to be a new university education institution in the framework of the &#8220;Veiga Sim\u00e3o reform&#8221;. Over the years, Iscte has increased in size and scope within new scientific areas. Today it has five schools on two campuses, one in Lisbon and one also in Sintra since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, Iscte joined the Foundation of Portuguese Universities and, in 2005, the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP).<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, while maintaining its role as a public university, Iscte became one of the three Portuguese universities under a Public Foundation regime, managed under private law. Alongside this change, it also changes its designation to Iscte &#8211; Instituto Universit\u00e1rio de Lisboa (Iscte \u2013 University Institute of Lisbon).<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, it adopted a new organizational structure based on 16 departments and four schools: ECSH &#8211; School of Social Sciences and Humanities \/ ESPP &#8211; School of Sociology and Public Policy \/ IBS &#8211; Iscte Business School \/ ISTA &#8211; School of Technology and Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the President of the Republic distinguished Iscte &#8211; Instituto Universit\u00e1rio de Lisboa with the Order of Public Instruction.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, construction began on Iscte Knowledge and Innovation, a building complex intended for the Technology Transfer and Valorization Center (CVTT), which will house eight research centers (all classified as Excellent or Very Good), ten laboratories and three observatories.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022-2023, teaching will begin at the fifth school: the Iscte Sintra School of Digital Technologies, Economics, and Society, a new campus located 30 km from Lisbon. It will offer eight innovative degrees which excel at the intersection of technology and social sciences, stimulating applied research and interdisciplinarity, characteristics of Iscte throughout its 50 years in existence.<\/p>\n<p>The anniversary was marked on December 7th, 2022, at the &#8220;National Meeting 50 Years of Veiga Sim\u00e3o Reform, 50 years of Democracy&#8221;, an initiative aimed to debate the &#8220;University: Key to the Future&#8221;, which mobilized Iscte, the Commission of the Commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April, and CRUP, and had the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Iscte has more than 13 thousand students of 90 nationalities, with about 60% in post-graduate education.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;80px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;6596&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;40px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Rector&#8217;s Message<\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"106\" data-end=\"447\">I assume the rectorship of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Iscte \u2013 Instituto Universit\u00e1rio de Lisboa<\/span><\/span> at a time when the world is experiencing the combined effects of cascading crises and senseless wars. At a time when democracies are undergoing processes of erosion from within, and when civilizational principles we once took to be irreversible are being called into question.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"930\">In times such as these, it is more important than ever to strengthen institutions and build trust. Universities have a fundamental role to play here, if they are able to reinvent themselves\u2014but also if they are able to stand united against threats to their common foundations: academic freedom and critical thinking, institutional autonomy, the integration of teaching and research, openness to dialogue and the rejection of intolerance, as well as scientific ethics and integrity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"1128\">This is how I see the joint work of universities within the framework of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">CRUP \u2013 Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas<\/span><\/span>, as well as that of the university I have the honour and responsibility to represent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1130\" data-end=\"1559\">Iscte stands out for its interdisciplinarity; for its capacity to grow sustainably from its core areas and from the articulation between them; for its strong alliance between the social sciences and technology; for its active teaching and learning methodologies and its agility in innovation; for its close engagement with society and the territory in which it operates; for its global ambition; and for its culture of proximity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1766\">In recent years, Iscte has modernised and consolidated its reputation as one of the most dynamic higher education institutions in the country. It has been living up to its motto, \u201cIscte \u2013 a place to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1768\" data-end=\"2026\">We will continue to be guided by the same ideals, promoting higher education as a human right and a public good; advancing scientific knowledge against obscurantism, rigour against disinformation, and engagement with society against isolation and stagnation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2028\" data-end=\"2095\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Working together with other universities will make us all stronger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ph.
